Arkansas coach Smith bankruptcy shows $25.7M debt (Yahoo! Sports)

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 20 September 2012 | 09.04

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- New documents filed in Arkansas coach John L. Smith's bankruptcy show he has debts of more than $25 million and assets of just over $1.2 million.

Smith filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy earlier this month after real estate investments he made in Kentucky went sour. The documents filed Wednesday show Smith's biggest assets are two retirement accounts worth about $600,000 each. Smith claims both are exempt from liquidation.

The largest debt listed is $20 million owed to a business in Louisville, Ky., called Terra Springs LLC.

Smith has said he made land investments when he was coaching Louisville from 1998-2002 and that he and other investors lost money when the real estate market tanked.

After Arkansas fired Bobby Petrino, Smith accepted a 10-month contract worth $850,000 to lead the Razorbacks.

Jones' blast gives Baltimore 3-1 win over Seattle (Yahoo! Sports)

SEATTLE (AP) -- Those involved in continuing Baltimore's late-season surge - whether it's taking nine, 11 or 18 innings to get the victories - continue to marvel at what the Orioles are accomplishing and the ways they are getting it done.

The Orioles are hanging around the AL East race, surging to the top of the wild-card chase and winning at all hours of the day, night and early morning.

''It's crazy. I thought we were going to play another 15 or 16 tonight. We were doing dancing in there, stuff like that,'' Baltimore starter Joe Saunders said. ''It gets to the point where you get comfortable in those situations.''

Adam Jones hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning and the Orioles won their 15th straight extra-innings game with a 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

A night after the teams played an 18-inning marathon that lasted nearly 6 hours, Jones, the one-time Mariners prospect, gave Baltimore a huge boost in its race with the Yankees for the lead in the AL East. Even with New York sweeping a doubleheader from Toronto on Wednesday, the Orioles stayed just a half-game back in the division race. Additionally, the Orioles moved into the top spot in the AL wild-card race after Oakland was handed a 6-2 loss in Detroit.

According to the Orioles, with information from the Elias Sports Bureau, the 15 straight extra-inning wins is the longest streak since the Cleveland Indians won 17 straight in 1949. Throw in a sweep of Seattle and wins in seven of nine and the Orioles are making plenty of September noise.

''We need the wins. It doesn't matter who or how, we just need the wins,'' Jones said.

Jones' turned on a 3-2 pitch from Seattle's Josh Kinney (0-3) and sent his 30th homer into the Baltimore bullpen in left field to finally break a 1-1 tie that had lasted since the fourth inning. Jones became the first Baltimore outfielder to reach 30 homers since Brady Anderson hit 50 in 1996. It was his third career homer against the franchise that drafted the talented center fielder, and then traded him to the Orioles as part of a massive deal that brought pitcher Erik Bedard to Seattle.

Jim Johnson pitched the bottom of the 11th for his major league-leading 45th save. It wasn't a basic save, though, as Kyle Seager and Jesus Montero started the inning with singles. Johnson quickly rebounded to get Justin Smoak to ground into a 3-6-1 double play.

Michael Saunders walked, but was caught stealing by Taylor Teagarden trying to get into scoring position while pinch-hitter John Jaso never got the bat off his shoulder for the final out.

''I thought they were going to take their chances with Jaso hitting and when he took off I was a little surprised, but I got a good pitch to throw on and it got there in time,'' said Teagarden, whose RBI single in the 18th inning the night before proved to be the winning run.

Saunders didn't second-guess his decision to try and get into scoring position.

''I had to be aggressive in that situation and I had to get to second base,'' he said.

Baltimore was only able to reach the 11th thanks to Luis Ayala's pitching in the bottom of the 10th. Seattle loaded the bases with two outs thanks to walks to Saunders, Trayvon Robinson and Dustin Ackley. Ayala (5-4) was brought in to face Franklin Gutierrez, who hit his fourth homer of the season in the fourth inning to account for Seattle's only run. Gutierrez was able to work the count to 3-2, but Ayala came inside and forced a weak pop up to shortstop to end Seattle's best scoring threat.

Lost in the extra inning drama were the performances of starters Joe Saunders and Felix Hernandez on a night both teams needed a break for their bullpens.

Saunders was the perfect option for the Orioles to have on the mound considering his past success against the Mariners in Seattle. In his previous six starts at Safeco Field, Saunders was 6-0 with a 0.98 ERA. It was just the recipe Baltimore needed with a taxed bullpen that saw seven relievers work in Tuesday night's game.

Saunders did his part getting through eight innings. He gave up five hits and struck out two. It was just the second time this season - and first since joining the Orioles in August - that Saunders pitched at least eight innings. He had a complete game three-hitter for Arizona against Miami in April.

''You can talk a lot about what happened this game, offensively and what not, but the conversation has to start with the effort that Joe gave us,'' Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.

Hernandez gave up just one run, six hits and struck out eight. The lone run off Seattle's ace was due to hustle. Chris Davis was running on a 3-2 pitch and scored from first on Mark Reynolds' single in the fourth inning, sliding across home plate ahead of Jesus Montero's sweep tag.

Notes: Baltimore swept the Mariners in Seattle for the first time since 1997. ... Baltimore prospect Dylan Bundy was recalled from Double-A Bowie on Wednesday. The Orioles needed the extra arm in the bullpen after Tuesday's 18-inning marathon and the 19-year-old was the choice. ... Tuesday's game was the second-longest in Safeco Field history by innings and the longest by time at 5 hours, 44 minutes. ... Baltimore LHP Brian Matusz pitched in the 10th inning less than 24 hours after needing to go to a Seattle hospital seeking treatment for an allergic food reaction.

Reds' Baker diagnosed with irregular heartbeat (Yahoo! Sports)

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 19 September 2012 | 23.13

CHICAGO (AP) -- Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat on Wednesday night and was expected to stay overnight in a Chicago hospital.

Baker left Wrigley Field in street clothes more than two hours before Wednesday night's game, and a team spokesman said he would have chest X-rays to ''rule out pneumonia.''

''I guess the good thing is it's not pneumonia, but the bad thing he has an irregular heartbeat, so basically they will over keep him over at the hospital and run some more tests in the morning before he is set free,'' Reds head trainer Paul Lessard said.

Baker will not be with the team on Thursday and his return is uncertain.

''He is not going to be here for tomorrow's game because they will be running tests. He said he will meet all the reporters in Cincinnati,'' Lessard said following the Reds' 6-5 victory in 11 innings.

Cincinnati lowered its magic number to clinch a playoff spot to one with the Los Angeles Dodgers splitting a doubleheader at Washington. The Reds' magic number for a second NL Central title in three years is three.

Lessard said Baker was having trouble breathing and has a history of having an irregular heartbeat.

Cabrera and Verlander help Tigers top A's 6-2 (Yahoo! Sports)

DETROIT (AP) -- Detroit manager Jim Leyland had his head on a swivel, looking at reporters when they asked a question one moment and glancing up toward the TV in his office with Kansas City leading Chicago when it got quiet.

''If I didn't have this on, I might as well go home,'' Leyland said.

The Tigers improved their chances of sticking around beyond the regular season when Miguel Cabrera homered, Omar Infante drove in three runs and Justin Verlander pitched six scoreless innings to help them beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Wednesday night.

The Royals later helped out with a 3-0 win over the White Sox that trimmed their lead to two games over Detroit in the AL Central with 14 games remaining.

The Tigers have won two straight over the A's - and 28 of their last 36 games at home.

''We played a couple good games against one of the hottest teams in all of baseball,'' Leyland said. ''That's pretty good.''

Oakland, clinging to an AL wild-card spot, has dropped three straight and might have had a costly loss on the mound because Brett Anderson (4-2) left the game after two-plus innings with a strained right oblique.

''He's getting an MRI right now,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said. ''So, we won't know anything until he gets back.''

Melvin plans to pitch Dan Strally in Anderson's spot in the rotation if he can't make his next start.

The A's forced Justin Verlander (15-8) to throw 122 pitches and that ended his night. He allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five.

''It was a grind,'' Verlander said.

Octavio Dotel struck out two in a perfect seventh. Joaquin Benoit had two strikeouts in the eighth. Jose Valverde closed the game in a non-save situation, entering with a six-run lead, and was booed after giving up two-out RBI singles to Cliff Pennington and Stephen Drew.

Detroit played some small ball to take a 3-0 lead in the third.

Andy Dirks and Gerald Laird started the inning with bunt singles and advanced on Austin Jackson's groundout. Infante followed with a double down the left-field line to put the Tigers up 2-0.

''Those were two perfect bunts or they would have been outs,'' Melvin said.

Infante's groundout in the eighth inning gave the Tigers a six-run lead.

After walking Cabrera intentionally and giving Prince Fielder a free pass on four pitches to load the bases, Anderson was injured while pitching to Delmon Young. Anderson fell forward and landed awkwardly after throwing his 48th pitch. Oakland trainer Nick Paparesta and Melvin talked with Anderson briefly on the field before deciding to take him out of the game.

''We could see earlier in the inning that he was trying to stretch out his back, so I don't think the fall had anything to do with it,'' Melvin said. ''We just checked him at that point and decided we didn't want to go any farther with him.''

Right-hander Pat Neshek replaced Anderson and Young promptly hit a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta had an error in the fifth - snapping a 75-game errorless streak - but he helped turn a double play to end the inning. He chipped in at the plate in the home half, hitting an RBI single to put Detroit ahead 4-0.

Cabrera sent Jim Miller's 94 mph high fastball on an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field for his 41st home run and 130th RBI to bolster his shot at being baseball's first Triple Crown winner since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski pulled off the feat in 1967.

''It's something that is a dream,'' Cabrera said. ''But right now, I got to focus on trying to help us make the playoffs.''

Verlander said it has been ''unbelievable,'' to watch Cabrera this season.

''Obviously, he's got my support for MVP,'' the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young award winner. ''He's one home run away from the Triple Crown, and that's a rarity in baseball, and that's a testament to how good of a player he is.

''Look at the ball he hit for a home run. We were talking about that, you just don't see that. You execute your pitch, 94 up at his chin, and he hits a home run.

NOTES: Tigers RHP Max Scherzer hopes to make his next scheduled start on Sunday at home against Minnesota. He left the series opener against Oakland after just two innings because of a fatigued right shoulder. ''It wasn't sharp pain, it was weakness,'' he said. ''I need a couple days of not throwing.'' ... A's OF Coco Crisp didn't play because of infections in both eyes and Melvin is hoping his contagious ailment doesn't spread. ''He's got his own towels,'' Melvin said. ... Tigers C Alex Avila, still feeling the effects of colliding with Fielder on Sunday, didn't play and the team is hoping he'll return this weekend at home against the Twins. ... Peralta's 75-game scoreless streak was the longest by a position player for the Tigers in a season since at least 1957.

Yanks sweep doubleheader from Blue Jays (Yahoo! Sports)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ichiro Suzuki had a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, his seventh hit of the day, to help the New York Yankees complete a doubleheader sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays with a 2-1 win Wednesday night that ensured they remained atop the AL East.

Suzuki made a difficult catch with the bases loaded in the eighth inning of the opener to preserve a lead for Andy Pettitte in a 4-2 victory.

New York will end the night with at least a half-game division lead, pending on the outcome of Baltimore's game against Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners.

The wily outfielder had three hits in the opener batting leadoff in place of Derek Jeter, who rested his sore ankle in the first game of the day-night doubleheader. Jeter started at shortstop for the first time in a week and got his 200th hit on Ricky Romero's first pitch.

The single to center tied Jeter with Lou Gehrig for most 200-hit seasons for New York with eight.

Rafael Soriano closed both games, notching his 41st and 42nd saves, the first time he saved two in one day.

The Blue Jays, playing their first doubleheader against the Yankees since 1986, were without shortstop Yunel Escobar, who began a three-game suspension for wearing eye black displaying an anti-gay slur written in Spanish during a game last weekend against Boston.

Toronto dropped to 66-81, guaranteeing it will not have a winning record this season.

With the score 1-1, Curtis Granderson was walked by Steve Delabar (4-3) to open the eighth. He moved up on Jayson Nix's sacrifice and stole third. With two outs, Suzuki slapped an opposite field hit to left for the lead. Suzuki stole two bases in the inning to give him four.

The Yankees had seven steals in the nightcap, their most in a game in three years.

Cody Eppley (1-2) got one out for his first win since April 27, 2011, for Texas against Toronto.

David Phelps followed Pettitte's sparkling five-inning return to the mound by pitching into the seventh. He gave up one run and three hits.

Romero remained tied for the Blue Jays record with 13 straight losses and walked five to up his AL-leading total to 99. It was his third game in which he allowed one run and didn't win - two no-decisions.

Adeiny Hechavarria's RBI single in the second after Phelps walked was just the 24th run Toronto has scored in Romero's last 13 starts.

In the bottom half, Chris Stewart drove in a run with a double to left that bounced over the wall and prevented Suzuki from scoring from first. Suzuki had singled and Nix was thrown out trying to score on a strong throw by center fielder Colby Rasmus. Romero had walked two to set up the tying run.

Romero was finished after allowing seven hits in six innings. He struck out five.

After driving in a run with a groundout in the first game, Alex Rodriguez came up with a runner in scoring position in each of his first three at-bats in the second. He grounded into a double play and struck out twice. The fans let him hear it in the fifth when he fanned with runners on first and second then again when he struck out with none on in the seventh, his fifth K of the day.

In the opener, Pettitte (4-3) gave up four hits in his first start since a hot shot off the bat of Cleveland's Casey Kotchman broke his left fibula on June 27.

Pettitte struggled a bit with his command, walking two, but kept the Blue Jays from hitting the ball hard with a biting breaking ball. He put runners on in each of his first four innings and had a runner on third in the second through fourth innings. But he got timely groundouts in the second, third - a double play - and fourth to avoid trouble. Then had a six-pitch fifth to earn the win.

''He gave us everything that we asked for,'' manager Joe Girardi said.

With the 40-year-old lefty on a 75-pitch limit, Girardi mixed and matched liberally, using six relievers.

Clay Rapada, Derek Lowe, Joba Chamberlain and Boone Logan held Toronto scoreless through seven innings. Then Robertson gave up an RBI single to pinch-hitter Kelly Johnson and a run-scoring double to Omar Vziquel in the eighth.

Soriano relieved with two outs and runners on second and third. He walked Anthony Gose after a foul drive that landed about a foot foul down the left-field line. Davis followed with his liner to left field that Suzuki caught.

Nick Swisher had an RBI single in the bottom half.

Toronto's 45-year-old Vizquel had two hits to move past Babe Ruth for 41st on the career list at 2,874.

NOTES: Toronto's Henderson Alvarez (9-13) allowed five hits in seven innings and struck out a career-high seven. ... Toronto DH Edwin Encarnacion (sore right big toe) did not play in the either game. ... The Blue Jays will play another doubleheader Monday, making up an Aug. 26 postponement at Baltimore. They will play nine games in seven days. ... To make room for Pettitte on the 40-man roster, the Yankees recalled RHP Dellin Betances from the minors and placed him on the 60-day DL.

Hamilton, Beltre out of Rangers' lineup (Yahoo! Sports)

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Sluggers Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre have been scratched from the Texas Rangers' lineup for their game against the Los Angeles Angels.

Hamilton is out with a recurring sinus condition, which also forced him to leave Tuesday night's series opener in the fourth inning when it affected the center fielder's vision. It was the same condition that bothered the All-Star back in May.

Beltre remained at his home in Southern California after seeing a doctor about abdominal discomfort. It first started bothering the Gold Glove third baseman before Tuesday's game, but he batted three times as the designated hitter before leaving in the ninth inning for a pinch hitter with the Rangers down by eight runs.

Hamilton entered Wednesday leading the AL with 42 home runs.

ABC to interview Sandusky abuse case's Victim 1 (Yahoo! Sports)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- ABC will interview the young man whose 2009 allegations of sexual abuse led to the Penn State scandal and the criminal conviction of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Attorney Michael Boni, who represents the teenager known in court papers as Victim 1, said Wednesday that ABC landed the first interview with his client, who has a book coming out this fall.

It's unclear when the ABC interview would air. ABC didn't immediately return a phone message left Wednesday seeking comment. The New York Post was first to report the ABC exclusive.

Sandusky was convicted in June of dozens of criminal counts of sexual abuse of 10 boys on and off campus. At age 68, he awaits sentencing, which likely will send him to prison for the rest of his life.

Victim 1 and his mother reported Sandusky to the boy's high school and the Clinton County child protective agency in November 2009. Their complaint triggered a state investigation that last year resulted in criminal charges against Sandusky and against two university officials accused of failing to report suspected child abuse and of lying to a grand jury.

According to a lawsuit that Victim 1 filed against Penn State, he met Sandusky about eight years ago, when he was 11 and was a first-year participant in a camp sponsored by Sandusky's charity, The Second Mile. In his second year, he drew Sandusky's attention and accepted invitations to spend nights at the coach's State College home and to attend professional sports events, the lawsuit said.

Sandusky was accused of fondling the boy and performing oral sex on him multiple times over a period of several years.

Sandusky, who is jailed, didn't testify at trial but maintains his innocence. He has acknowledged he showered with boys but denied molesting them. His wife, Dottie Sandusky, testified that she never saw him doing anything inappropriate with boys he took to their home.

NHL cancels September slate of preseason games (Yahoo! Sports)

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NHL canceled its entire September preseason game schedule on Wednesday, the first on-ice casualty of the four-day lockout.

The league is wiping out all games through Sept. 30, a move it deems ''necessary because of the absence of a collective bargaining agreement'' with the players' association.

The NHL also said the 2012 Kraft Hockeyville preseason game, scheduled for Oct. 3 in Belleville, Ontario, has been postponed until 2013, bringing the total to 60 games called off on Wednesday.

The regular season is scheduled to begin on Oct. 11.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said the league has ''no set policy on cancellations'' of other games.

Also Wednesday, a person familiar with the plan says NHL employees at the league offices will switch to a four-day work week Oct. 1 because of the lockout.

The move will effectively cut salaries by 20 percent. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the NHL hadn't made the plan public.

The news was first reported by The Canadian Press.

The Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators have let staff go because of the lockout, while several other teams have said they don't have any plans to do so as of now.

The league locked out its players at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, its fourth shutdown since 1992.

The preseason cancellations included a Washington Capitals game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sept. 26 in Baltimore.

Last year, in the inaugural Baltimore Hockey Classic, the Capitals hosted the Nashville Predators and drew a sold-out crowd.

Pettitte returns with win, leads Yanks over Jays (Yahoo! Sports)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Andy Pettitte pitched five sparkling innings in his return from a broken leg and his bullpen barely held on, keeping the New York Yankees atop the AL East with a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of Wednesday's day-night doubleheader.

Pettitte (4-3) looked his old steely self in giving up four hits in his first September start since 2010. The 40-year-old left-hander, injured on June 27, boosted the Yankees into a half-game division lead over the pesky Baltimore Orioles.

Robinson Cano had an RBI double in a three-run first against Henderson Alvarez (9-13) that also included Alex Rodriguez's run-scoring groundout and Curtis Granderson's sacrifice fly.

Rafael Soriano escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth after Toronto closed to 3-2, and New York extended a winning streak to three for the first time since Aug. 13-15.

In the makeup of a game washed out Tuesday night, Ichiro Suzuki had three hits batting leadoff as Derek Jeter was given the opener off. Jeter was expected to play shortstop in the nightcap for the first time in a week because of a sore left ankle.

Pettitte threw 75 pitches in his first start since a line drive off the bat of Cleveland's Casey Kotchman broke his left fibula. Joe Girardi mixed and matched liberally, using six relievers

Clay Rapada, Derek Lowe, Joba Chamberlain and Boone Logan held Toronto scoreless through seven innings. Then David Robertson gave up an RBI single to pinch-hitter Kelly Johnson and a run-scoring double to Omar Vziquel in the eighth.

Soriano relieved with two outs and runners on second and third, then walked Anthony Gose after a foul drive about a foot foul down the left-field line that just missed being a two-run double. Rajai Davis followed with a sinking liner to left field that Suzuki caught against his stomach for the third out, getting a big cheer from the sparse makeup game crowd.

Nick Swisher had an RBI single in the bottom half. Soriano pitched a perfect ninth for his 41st save in 44 chances.

Toronto's 45-year-old Omar Vizquel had two hits to move past Babe Ruth for 41st on the career list at 2,874.

The Blue Jays, playing their first doubleheader against the Yankees since 1986, were without Yunel Escobar, who began a three-game suspension for wearing eye black displaying anti-gay slur written in Spanish during a game last weekend against Boston.

The few fans who made it for the start gave Pettitte as loud a cheer when he was introduced.

Pettitte struggled a bit with his command, walking two, but kept the Blue Jays from hitting the ball hard with a biting breaking ball. He put runners on in each of his first four innings and had runner on third in the second through fourth innings. But he got timely groundouts in the second, third - a double play - and fourth to avoid trouble.

NOTES: Robinson has a 7.00 ERA in September. ... Alvarez allowed five hits in seven innings and struck out a career-high seven. ... Toronto DH Edwin Encarnacion (sore right big toe) was not in the starting lineup for the opener. ... The Blue Jays will play another doubleheader Monday, making up an Aug. 26 postponement at Baltimore. They will play nine games in seven days. ... To make room for Pettitte on the 40-man roster, the Yankees recalled RHP Dellin Betances from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and placed him on the 60-day DL.

TCU leading rusher James out of for season (knee) (Yahoo! Sports)

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- TCU leading rusher Waymon James will miss the rest of the season for the 17th-ranked Horned Frogs because of a knee injury.

School spokesman Mark Cohen said Wednesday that James has a season-ending injury.

James, who appeared to get hurt in the fourth quarter of Saturday's win in Kansas, was averaging 9.9 yards on his 17 carries. He had 168 yards and a touchdown for TCU (2-0).

When asked Tuesday, coach Gary Patterson said James would be a game-time decision for Saturday's home game against Virginia. He didn't elaborate then.

With James and Matthew Tucker, TCU came into this season as one of only five FBS schools returning a pair of 700-yard rushers.

Tucker has 19 carries for 100 yards and a score, the 27th of his career.
