Arkansas coach Smith bankruptcy shows $25.7M debt (Yahoo! Sports)

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 20 September 2012 | 09.04

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) -- New documents filed in Arkansas coach John L. Smith's bankruptcy show he has debts of more than $25 million and assets of just over $1.2 million.

Smith filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy earlier this month after real estate investments he made in Kentucky went sour. The documents filed Wednesday show Smith's biggest assets are two retirement accounts worth about $600,000 each. Smith claims both are exempt from liquidation.

The largest debt listed is $20 million owed to a business in Louisville, Ky., called Terra Springs LLC.

Smith has said he made land investments when he was coaching Louisville from 1998-2002 and that he and other investors lost money when the real estate market tanked.

After Arkansas fired Bobby Petrino, Smith accepted a 10-month contract worth $850,000 to lead the Razorbacks.

Jones' blast gives Baltimore 3-1 win over Seattle (Yahoo! Sports)

SEATTLE (AP) -- Those involved in continuing Baltimore's late-season surge - whether it's taking nine, 11 or 18 innings to get the victories - continue to marvel at what the Orioles are accomplishing and the ways they are getting it done.

The Orioles are hanging around the AL East race, surging to the top of the wild-card chase and winning at all hours of the day, night and early morning.

''It's crazy. I thought we were going to play another 15 or 16 tonight. We were doing dancing in there, stuff like that,'' Baltimore starter Joe Saunders said. ''It gets to the point where you get comfortable in those situations.''

Adam Jones hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th inning and the Orioles won their 15th straight extra-innings game with a 3-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night.

A night after the teams played an 18-inning marathon that lasted nearly 6 hours, Jones, the one-time Mariners prospect, gave Baltimore a huge boost in its race with the Yankees for the lead in the AL East. Even with New York sweeping a doubleheader from Toronto on Wednesday, the Orioles stayed just a half-game back in the division race. Additionally, the Orioles moved into the top spot in the AL wild-card race after Oakland was handed a 6-2 loss in Detroit.

According to the Orioles, with information from the Elias Sports Bureau, the 15 straight extra-inning wins is the longest streak since the Cleveland Indians won 17 straight in 1949. Throw in a sweep of Seattle and wins in seven of nine and the Orioles are making plenty of September noise.

''We need the wins. It doesn't matter who or how, we just need the wins,'' Jones said.

Jones' turned on a 3-2 pitch from Seattle's Josh Kinney (0-3) and sent his 30th homer into the Baltimore bullpen in left field to finally break a 1-1 tie that had lasted since the fourth inning. Jones became the first Baltimore outfielder to reach 30 homers since Brady Anderson hit 50 in 1996. It was his third career homer against the franchise that drafted the talented center fielder, and then traded him to the Orioles as part of a massive deal that brought pitcher Erik Bedard to Seattle.

Jim Johnson pitched the bottom of the 11th for his major league-leading 45th save. It wasn't a basic save, though, as Kyle Seager and Jesus Montero started the inning with singles. Johnson quickly rebounded to get Justin Smoak to ground into a 3-6-1 double play.

Michael Saunders walked, but was caught stealing by Taylor Teagarden trying to get into scoring position while pinch-hitter John Jaso never got the bat off his shoulder for the final out.

''I thought they were going to take their chances with Jaso hitting and when he took off I was a little surprised, but I got a good pitch to throw on and it got there in time,'' said Teagarden, whose RBI single in the 18th inning the night before proved to be the winning run.

Saunders didn't second-guess his decision to try and get into scoring position.

''I had to be aggressive in that situation and I had to get to second base,'' he said.

Baltimore was only able to reach the 11th thanks to Luis Ayala's pitching in the bottom of the 10th. Seattle loaded the bases with two outs thanks to walks to Saunders, Trayvon Robinson and Dustin Ackley. Ayala (5-4) was brought in to face Franklin Gutierrez, who hit his fourth homer of the season in the fourth inning to account for Seattle's only run. Gutierrez was able to work the count to 3-2, but Ayala came inside and forced a weak pop up to shortstop to end Seattle's best scoring threat.

Lost in the extra inning drama were the performances of starters Joe Saunders and Felix Hernandez on a night both teams needed a break for their bullpens.

Saunders was the perfect option for the Orioles to have on the mound considering his past success against the Mariners in Seattle. In his previous six starts at Safeco Field, Saunders was 6-0 with a 0.98 ERA. It was just the recipe Baltimore needed with a taxed bullpen that saw seven relievers work in Tuesday night's game.

Saunders did his part getting through eight innings. He gave up five hits and struck out two. It was just the second time this season - and first since joining the Orioles in August - that Saunders pitched at least eight innings. He had a complete game three-hitter for Arizona against Miami in April.

''You can talk a lot about what happened this game, offensively and what not, but the conversation has to start with the effort that Joe gave us,'' Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.

Hernandez gave up just one run, six hits and struck out eight. The lone run off Seattle's ace was due to hustle. Chris Davis was running on a 3-2 pitch and scored from first on Mark Reynolds' single in the fourth inning, sliding across home plate ahead of Jesus Montero's sweep tag.

Notes: Baltimore swept the Mariners in Seattle for the first time since 1997. ... Baltimore prospect Dylan Bundy was recalled from Double-A Bowie on Wednesday. The Orioles needed the extra arm in the bullpen after Tuesday's 18-inning marathon and the 19-year-old was the choice. ... Tuesday's game was the second-longest in Safeco Field history by innings and the longest by time at 5 hours, 44 minutes. ... Baltimore LHP Brian Matusz pitched in the 10th inning less than 24 hours after needing to go to a Seattle hospital seeking treatment for an allergic food reaction.

Reds' Baker diagnosed with irregular heartbeat (Yahoo! Sports)

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 19 September 2012 | 23.13

CHICAGO (AP) -- Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat on Wednesday night and was expected to stay overnight in a Chicago hospital.

Baker left Wrigley Field in street clothes more than two hours before Wednesday night's game, and a team spokesman said he would have chest X-rays to ''rule out pneumonia.''

''I guess the good thing is it's not pneumonia, but the bad thing he has an irregular heartbeat, so basically they will over keep him over at the hospital and run some more tests in the morning before he is set free,'' Reds head trainer Paul Lessard said.

Baker will not be with the team on Thursday and his return is uncertain.

''He is not going to be here for tomorrow's game because they will be running tests. He said he will meet all the reporters in Cincinnati,'' Lessard said following the Reds' 6-5 victory in 11 innings.

Cincinnati lowered its magic number to clinch a playoff spot to one with the Los Angeles Dodgers splitting a doubleheader at Washington. The Reds' magic number for a second NL Central title in three years is three.

Lessard said Baker was having trouble breathing and has a history of having an irregular heartbeat.

Cabrera and Verlander help Tigers top A's 6-2 (Yahoo! Sports)

DETROIT (AP) -- Detroit manager Jim Leyland had his head on a swivel, looking at reporters when they asked a question one moment and glancing up toward the TV in his office with Kansas City leading Chicago when it got quiet.

''If I didn't have this on, I might as well go home,'' Leyland said.

The Tigers improved their chances of sticking around beyond the regular season when Miguel Cabrera homered, Omar Infante drove in three runs and Justin Verlander pitched six scoreless innings to help them beat the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Wednesday night.

The Royals later helped out with a 3-0 win over the White Sox that trimmed their lead to two games over Detroit in the AL Central with 14 games remaining.

The Tigers have won two straight over the A's - and 28 of their last 36 games at home.

''We played a couple good games against one of the hottest teams in all of baseball,'' Leyland said. ''That's pretty good.''

Oakland, clinging to an AL wild-card spot, has dropped three straight and might have had a costly loss on the mound because Brett Anderson (4-2) left the game after two-plus innings with a strained right oblique.

''He's getting an MRI right now,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said. ''So, we won't know anything until he gets back.''

Melvin plans to pitch Dan Strally in Anderson's spot in the rotation if he can't make his next start.

The A's forced Justin Verlander (15-8) to throw 122 pitches and that ended his night. He allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five.

''It was a grind,'' Verlander said.

Octavio Dotel struck out two in a perfect seventh. Joaquin Benoit had two strikeouts in the eighth. Jose Valverde closed the game in a non-save situation, entering with a six-run lead, and was booed after giving up two-out RBI singles to Cliff Pennington and Stephen Drew.

Detroit played some small ball to take a 3-0 lead in the third.

Andy Dirks and Gerald Laird started the inning with bunt singles and advanced on Austin Jackson's groundout. Infante followed with a double down the left-field line to put the Tigers up 2-0.

''Those were two perfect bunts or they would have been outs,'' Melvin said.

Infante's groundout in the eighth inning gave the Tigers a six-run lead.

After walking Cabrera intentionally and giving Prince Fielder a free pass on four pitches to load the bases, Anderson was injured while pitching to Delmon Young. Anderson fell forward and landed awkwardly after throwing his 48th pitch. Oakland trainer Nick Paparesta and Melvin talked with Anderson briefly on the field before deciding to take him out of the game.

''We could see earlier in the inning that he was trying to stretch out his back, so I don't think the fall had anything to do with it,'' Melvin said. ''We just checked him at that point and decided we didn't want to go any farther with him.''

Right-hander Pat Neshek replaced Anderson and Young promptly hit a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta had an error in the fifth - snapping a 75-game errorless streak - but he helped turn a double play to end the inning. He chipped in at the plate in the home half, hitting an RBI single to put Detroit ahead 4-0.

Cabrera sent Jim Miller's 94 mph high fastball on an 0-2 pitch over the fence in left field for his 41st home run and 130th RBI to bolster his shot at being baseball's first Triple Crown winner since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski pulled off the feat in 1967.

''It's something that is a dream,'' Cabrera said. ''But right now, I got to focus on trying to help us make the playoffs.''

Verlander said it has been ''unbelievable,'' to watch Cabrera this season.

''Obviously, he's got my support for MVP,'' the reigning AL MVP and Cy Young award winner. ''He's one home run away from the Triple Crown, and that's a rarity in baseball, and that's a testament to how good of a player he is.

''Look at the ball he hit for a home run. We were talking about that, you just don't see that. You execute your pitch, 94 up at his chin, and he hits a home run.

NOTES: Tigers RHP Max Scherzer hopes to make his next scheduled start on Sunday at home against Minnesota. He left the series opener against Oakland after just two innings because of a fatigued right shoulder. ''It wasn't sharp pain, it was weakness,'' he said. ''I need a couple days of not throwing.'' ... A's OF Coco Crisp didn't play because of infections in both eyes and Melvin is hoping his contagious ailment doesn't spread. ''He's got his own towels,'' Melvin said. ... Tigers C Alex Avila, still feeling the effects of colliding with Fielder on Sunday, didn't play and the team is hoping he'll return this weekend at home against the Twins. ... Peralta's 75-game scoreless streak was the longest by a position player for the Tigers in a season since at least 1957.

Yanks sweep doubleheader from Blue Jays (Yahoo! Sports)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ichiro Suzuki had a go-ahead single in the eighth inning, his seventh hit of the day, to help the New York Yankees complete a doubleheader sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays with a 2-1 win Wednesday night that ensured they remained atop the AL East.

Suzuki made a difficult catch with the bases loaded in the eighth inning of the opener to preserve a lead for Andy Pettitte in a 4-2 victory.

New York will end the night with at least a half-game division lead, pending on the outcome of Baltimore's game against Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners.

The wily outfielder had three hits in the opener batting leadoff in place of Derek Jeter, who rested his sore ankle in the first game of the day-night doubleheader. Jeter started at shortstop for the first time in a week and got his 200th hit on Ricky Romero's first pitch.

The single to center tied Jeter with Lou Gehrig for most 200-hit seasons for New York with eight.

Rafael Soriano closed both games, notching his 41st and 42nd saves, the first time he saved two in one day.

The Blue Jays, playing their first doubleheader against the Yankees since 1986, were without shortstop Yunel Escobar, who began a three-game suspension for wearing eye black displaying an anti-gay slur written in Spanish during a game last weekend against Boston.

Toronto dropped to 66-81, guaranteeing it will not have a winning record this season.

With the score 1-1, Curtis Granderson was walked by Steve Delabar (4-3) to open the eighth. He moved up on Jayson Nix's sacrifice and stole third. With two outs, Suzuki slapped an opposite field hit to left for the lead. Suzuki stole two bases in the inning to give him four.

The Yankees had seven steals in the nightcap, their most in a game in three years.

Cody Eppley (1-2) got one out for his first win since April 27, 2011, for Texas against Toronto.

David Phelps followed Pettitte's sparkling five-inning return to the mound by pitching into the seventh. He gave up one run and three hits.

Romero remained tied for the Blue Jays record with 13 straight losses and walked five to up his AL-leading total to 99. It was his third game in which he allowed one run and didn't win - two no-decisions.

Adeiny Hechavarria's RBI single in the second after Phelps walked was just the 24th run Toronto has scored in Romero's last 13 starts.

In the bottom half, Chris Stewart drove in a run with a double to left that bounced over the wall and prevented Suzuki from scoring from first. Suzuki had singled and Nix was thrown out trying to score on a strong throw by center fielder Colby Rasmus. Romero had walked two to set up the tying run.

Romero was finished after allowing seven hits in six innings. He struck out five.

After driving in a run with a groundout in the first game, Alex Rodriguez came up with a runner in scoring position in each of his first three at-bats in the second. He grounded into a double play and struck out twice. The fans let him hear it in the fifth when he fanned with runners on first and second then again when he struck out with none on in the seventh, his fifth K of the day.

In the opener, Pettitte (4-3) gave up four hits in his first start since a hot shot off the bat of Cleveland's Casey Kotchman broke his left fibula on June 27.

Pettitte struggled a bit with his command, walking two, but kept the Blue Jays from hitting the ball hard with a biting breaking ball. He put runners on in each of his first four innings and had a runner on third in the second through fourth innings. But he got timely groundouts in the second, third - a double play - and fourth to avoid trouble. Then had a six-pitch fifth to earn the win.

''He gave us everything that we asked for,'' manager Joe Girardi said.

With the 40-year-old lefty on a 75-pitch limit, Girardi mixed and matched liberally, using six relievers.

Clay Rapada, Derek Lowe, Joba Chamberlain and Boone Logan held Toronto scoreless through seven innings. Then Robertson gave up an RBI single to pinch-hitter Kelly Johnson and a run-scoring double to Omar Vziquel in the eighth.

Soriano relieved with two outs and runners on second and third. He walked Anthony Gose after a foul drive that landed about a foot foul down the left-field line. Davis followed with his liner to left field that Suzuki caught.

Nick Swisher had an RBI single in the bottom half.

Toronto's 45-year-old Vizquel had two hits to move past Babe Ruth for 41st on the career list at 2,874.

NOTES: Toronto's Henderson Alvarez (9-13) allowed five hits in seven innings and struck out a career-high seven. ... Toronto DH Edwin Encarnacion (sore right big toe) did not play in the either game. ... The Blue Jays will play another doubleheader Monday, making up an Aug. 26 postponement at Baltimore. They will play nine games in seven days. ... To make room for Pettitte on the 40-man roster, the Yankees recalled RHP Dellin Betances from the minors and placed him on the 60-day DL.

Hamilton, Beltre out of Rangers' lineup (Yahoo! Sports)

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Sluggers Josh Hamilton and Adrian Beltre have been scratched from the Texas Rangers' lineup for their game against the Los Angeles Angels.

Hamilton is out with a recurring sinus condition, which also forced him to leave Tuesday night's series opener in the fourth inning when it affected the center fielder's vision. It was the same condition that bothered the All-Star back in May.

Beltre remained at his home in Southern California after seeing a doctor about abdominal discomfort. It first started bothering the Gold Glove third baseman before Tuesday's game, but he batted three times as the designated hitter before leaving in the ninth inning for a pinch hitter with the Rangers down by eight runs.

Hamilton entered Wednesday leading the AL with 42 home runs.

ABC to interview Sandusky abuse case's Victim 1 (Yahoo! Sports)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- ABC will interview the young man whose 2009 allegations of sexual abuse led to the Penn State scandal and the criminal conviction of former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Attorney Michael Boni, who represents the teenager known in court papers as Victim 1, said Wednesday that ABC landed the first interview with his client, who has a book coming out this fall.

It's unclear when the ABC interview would air. ABC didn't immediately return a phone message left Wednesday seeking comment. The New York Post was first to report the ABC exclusive.

Sandusky was convicted in June of dozens of criminal counts of sexual abuse of 10 boys on and off campus. At age 68, he awaits sentencing, which likely will send him to prison for the rest of his life.

Victim 1 and his mother reported Sandusky to the boy's high school and the Clinton County child protective agency in November 2009. Their complaint triggered a state investigation that last year resulted in criminal charges against Sandusky and against two university officials accused of failing to report suspected child abuse and of lying to a grand jury.

According to a lawsuit that Victim 1 filed against Penn State, he met Sandusky about eight years ago, when he was 11 and was a first-year participant in a camp sponsored by Sandusky's charity, The Second Mile. In his second year, he drew Sandusky's attention and accepted invitations to spend nights at the coach's State College home and to attend professional sports events, the lawsuit said.

Sandusky was accused of fondling the boy and performing oral sex on him multiple times over a period of several years.

Sandusky, who is jailed, didn't testify at trial but maintains his innocence. He has acknowledged he showered with boys but denied molesting them. His wife, Dottie Sandusky, testified that she never saw him doing anything inappropriate with boys he took to their home.

NHL cancels September slate of preseason games (Yahoo! Sports)

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NHL canceled its entire September preseason game schedule on Wednesday, the first on-ice casualty of the four-day lockout.

The league is wiping out all games through Sept. 30, a move it deems ''necessary because of the absence of a collective bargaining agreement'' with the players' association.

The NHL also said the 2012 Kraft Hockeyville preseason game, scheduled for Oct. 3 in Belleville, Ontario, has been postponed until 2013, bringing the total to 60 games called off on Wednesday.

The regular season is scheduled to begin on Oct. 11.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said the league has ''no set policy on cancellations'' of other games.

Also Wednesday, a person familiar with the plan says NHL employees at the league offices will switch to a four-day work week Oct. 1 because of the lockout.

The move will effectively cut salaries by 20 percent. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the NHL hadn't made the plan public.

The news was first reported by The Canadian Press.

The Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators have let staff go because of the lockout, while several other teams have said they don't have any plans to do so as of now.

The league locked out its players at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, its fourth shutdown since 1992.

The preseason cancellations included a Washington Capitals game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sept. 26 in Baltimore.

Last year, in the inaugural Baltimore Hockey Classic, the Capitals hosted the Nashville Predators and drew a sold-out crowd.

Pettitte returns with win, leads Yanks over Jays (Yahoo! Sports)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Andy Pettitte pitched five sparkling innings in his return from a broken leg and his bullpen barely held on, keeping the New York Yankees atop the AL East with a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of Wednesday's day-night doubleheader.

Pettitte (4-3) looked his old steely self in giving up four hits in his first September start since 2010. The 40-year-old left-hander, injured on June 27, boosted the Yankees into a half-game division lead over the pesky Baltimore Orioles.

Robinson Cano had an RBI double in a three-run first against Henderson Alvarez (9-13) that also included Alex Rodriguez's run-scoring groundout and Curtis Granderson's sacrifice fly.

Rafael Soriano escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth after Toronto closed to 3-2, and New York extended a winning streak to three for the first time since Aug. 13-15.

In the makeup of a game washed out Tuesday night, Ichiro Suzuki had three hits batting leadoff as Derek Jeter was given the opener off. Jeter was expected to play shortstop in the nightcap for the first time in a week because of a sore left ankle.

Pettitte threw 75 pitches in his first start since a line drive off the bat of Cleveland's Casey Kotchman broke his left fibula. Joe Girardi mixed and matched liberally, using six relievers

Clay Rapada, Derek Lowe, Joba Chamberlain and Boone Logan held Toronto scoreless through seven innings. Then David Robertson gave up an RBI single to pinch-hitter Kelly Johnson and a run-scoring double to Omar Vziquel in the eighth.

Soriano relieved with two outs and runners on second and third, then walked Anthony Gose after a foul drive about a foot foul down the left-field line that just missed being a two-run double. Rajai Davis followed with a sinking liner to left field that Suzuki caught against his stomach for the third out, getting a big cheer from the sparse makeup game crowd.

Nick Swisher had an RBI single in the bottom half. Soriano pitched a perfect ninth for his 41st save in 44 chances.

Toronto's 45-year-old Omar Vizquel had two hits to move past Babe Ruth for 41st on the career list at 2,874.

The Blue Jays, playing their first doubleheader against the Yankees since 1986, were without Yunel Escobar, who began a three-game suspension for wearing eye black displaying anti-gay slur written in Spanish during a game last weekend against Boston.

The few fans who made it for the start gave Pettitte as loud a cheer when he was introduced.

Pettitte struggled a bit with his command, walking two, but kept the Blue Jays from hitting the ball hard with a biting breaking ball. He put runners on in each of his first four innings and had runner on third in the second through fourth innings. But he got timely groundouts in the second, third - a double play - and fourth to avoid trouble.

NOTES: Robinson has a 7.00 ERA in September. ... Alvarez allowed five hits in seven innings and struck out a career-high seven. ... Toronto DH Edwin Encarnacion (sore right big toe) was not in the starting lineup for the opener. ... The Blue Jays will play another doubleheader Monday, making up an Aug. 26 postponement at Baltimore. They will play nine games in seven days. ... To make room for Pettitte on the 40-man roster, the Yankees recalled RHP Dellin Betances from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and placed him on the 60-day DL.

TCU leading rusher James out of for season (knee) (Yahoo! Sports)

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- TCU leading rusher Waymon James will miss the rest of the season for the 17th-ranked Horned Frogs because of a knee injury.

School spokesman Mark Cohen said Wednesday that James has a season-ending injury.

James, who appeared to get hurt in the fourth quarter of Saturday's win in Kansas, was averaging 9.9 yards on his 17 carries. He had 168 yards and a touchdown for TCU (2-0).

When asked Tuesday, coach Gary Patterson said James would be a game-time decision for Saturday's home game against Virginia. He didn't elaborate then.

With James and Matthew Tucker, TCU came into this season as one of only five FBS schools returning a pair of 700-yard rushers.

Tucker has 19 carries for 100 yards and a score, the 27th of his career.

Bradshaw, Diehl to miss Giants' game vs. Panthers (Yahoo! Sports)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Running back Ahmad Bradshaw, offensive tackle David Diehl and wide receiver Domenik Hixon have all been ruled out of the New York Giants' game against the Carolina Panthers Thursday. The Super Bowl champions released their injury report Wednesday, adding that rookie defensive end Adewale Ojomo also will miss.

Bradshaw (neck), Diehl (knee) and Hixon (concussion) were hurt in Sunday's win over Tampa Bay and did not practice this week. Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, the NFC offensive player of the week, is questionable for the game with a foot injury, as is cornerback Michael Coe (hamstring).

Cornerback Prince Amukamara (ankle) and linebacker Keith Rivers (hamstring) are probable. Both did not play in the 41-34 win over the Buccaneers.

Jets' Revis to be limited, Keller still sidelined (Yahoo! Sports)

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Cornerback Darrelle Revis was expected to be limited at practice while recovering from a concussion suffered in the New York Jets' season opener.

Coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday that Revis has been cleared for practice, but still not for contact. Revis missed the Jets' game at Pittsburgh on Sunday after suffering what the team called a ''minor concussion.'' He says he was in ''a fog'' after he was first hurt, but has gotten progressively better since.

His status for the team's game at Miami on Sunday is still uncertain.

Revis needs to be cleared by the team physician and an independent neurological consultant in order to practice with full contact and then play.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez was on the injury report with tightness in his lower back, but Ryan said he didn't think it was serious and expected him to practice fully.

Tight end Dustin Keller was not expected to practice with a hamstring injury that also sidelined him against the Steelers. Ryan says fullback John Conner (right knee), linebacker Bryan Thomas (hamstring) and safety Eric Smith (hip, knee) were also not going to practice. Nose tackle Sione Po'uha (lower back) was also expected to be limited.

MLB unlikely to bar Cabrera from batting title (Yahoo! Sports)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Major League Baseball appears unlikely to interfere if Melky Cabrera wins the NL batting title while serving his 50-game suspension for a positive drug test.

The San Francisco Giants outfielder began Wednesday with a league-leading .346 average, seven points ahead of Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen.

Cabrera has 501 plate appearances, one fewer than the required amount if the Giants play 162 games. Under section 10.22(a) of the Official Baseball Rules, he would win the batting title if an extra hitless at-bat is added to his average and it remains higher than that of any other qualifying player.

''We'll see how it all plays out,'' baseball Commissioner Bud Selig said Wednesday after taping an episode of ''CenterStage'' for the YES Network. ''We generally don't interfere in that process. We'll take a look at it at the end of the year.''

Cabrera, the All-Star game MVP, was suspended Aug. 15 for a positive test for testosterone and is missing the final 45 games of the regular season.

During the YES interview, scheduled to air for the first time Sept. 27, Selig was asked whether records set during the Steroids Era should be revisited.

''You can't change records because once you get into that it would never stop,'' Selig said. ''It would create more problems than it would solve.''

Selig did say he was pleased an agreement was reached Tuesday to suspend Toronto shortstop Yunel Escobar for three games for wearing eye-black displaying an anti-gay slur written in Spanish during a game last weekend against Boston.

''When something like that happens, it's disappointing,'' Selig said.

Selig would not indicate whether he was closer to making a decision on the dispute between the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants. Oakland wants to build a ballpark in San Jose, which is part of the Giants' territory, and Selig appointed a committee in March 2009 to evaluate the issue.

''The committee has been working very hard,'' he said.

Ovechkin joins Russian team during NHL lockout (Yahoo! Sports)

MOSCOW (AP) -- Alexander Ovechkin is returning to his former Russian team Dynamo Moscow during the NHL lockout.

The KHL team said in a statement Wednesday that it has signed the Washington Capitals star to a contract that lasts until the lockout ends. It said Ovechkin has undergone medical exams and has already participated in training. It did not disclose the financial terms of his contract.

Ovechkin joined the Capitals in 2005 and was the NHL's MVP in 2008 and 2009.

He is the latest Russian star to return home during the lockout. Evgeny Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins has signed a deal with his former team, Metallurg Magnitogorsk. He was joined by fellow Penguin Sergei Gonchar, and Nikolai Kulemin of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Faclons RB Turner apologizes for DUI arrest (Yahoo! Sports)

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) -- Atlanta Falcons running back Michael Turner has apologized to his team and its fans for his drunken driving arrest.

Turner said Wednesday that he made ''a bad decision'' before he was stopped by police in suburban Gwinnett County around 5 a.m. Tuesday - just hours after scoring a touchdown in Atlanta's 27-21 win over Denver. Police say he was clocked doing 97 mph in a 65-mph zone and they booked him into jail on a DUI charge.

Turner says he's sorry for the embarrassment he's caused the team and vows to do the right things to address the matter. He also says he expects to play Sunday against the San Diego Chargers, his former team.

Redskins' Morgan deals with Twitter death threats (Yahoo! Sports)

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) -- Washington Redskins receiver Joshua Morgan felt the full downside of the social media age this week, receiving death threats and other venomous message on Twitter because of his fourth-quarter blunder in the loss to the St. Louis Rams.

Morgan talked Wednesday about the nastiness he's heard from fans since his unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for throwing the ball at Cortland Finnegan. The penalty cost the Redskins valuable field position during the team's final drive in Sunday's 31-28 defeat.

''I heard everything, especially when they get you on Twitter and are sending you death threats and wishing you bad things and your firstborn,'' Morgan said. ''You see it all, you hear it all. You never let it get to you, especially with me being from D.C. They treated me kind of like they did (San Francisco 49ers return man) Kyle Williams last year when he dropped a punt against the Giants.''

Morgan said the threats are keeping him focused. He said he wasn't tempted to discontinue his Twitter account.

''The only thing I take seriously is football and my family, and nothing really scares me,'' he said.

Morgan said he's been fined over the penalty but doesn't yet know the amount. He also said he wouldn't be throwing such a tantrum again. After all, raising the ire of fans is one thing, but getting a cold stare from the coaching staff is something else.

''Especially with coach Mike Shanahan,'' he said, ''none of us are dumb enough to make the same mistake twice.''

The Redskins play Cincinnati on Sunday.

AP Sources: UNC's Roy Williams has surgery (Yahoo! Sports)

North Carolina coach Roy Williams has had surgery to remove a kidney tumor, people familiar with the situation said Wednesday.

Two people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the school has not publicly released any details on Williams. One of the people who spoke to the AP said the severity of the tumor is unknown.

Team spokesman Matt Bowers would only confirm that the 62-year-old Hall of Fame coach had a ''medical procedure'' Wednesday morning.

The news was first reported by WRAL in Raleigh, N.C.

Williams will open practice next month for his 10th season at his alma mater, where he spent 10 years as an assistant to Dean Smith before taking over at Kansas and leading the Jayhawks to four Final Fours. Williams, who has 675 wins in 24 seasons, won NCAA championships with the Tar Heels in 2005 and 2009.

The Tar Heels have won the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title and reached the NCAA regional final the past two seasons.

Patriots sign TE Winslow, re-sign WR Branch (Yahoo! Sports)

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- The New England Patriots have signed tight end Kellen Winslow and re-signed wide receiver Deion Branch.

The announcement Wednesday came three days after tight end Aaron Hernandez was sidelined with a right ankle injury. The Patriots have not said how many games they expect him to miss.

Winslow was released by the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 1 after spending the past three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following five seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He had 75 receptions last season and has 437 in his career.

The Patriots released Branch on the final roster cutdown after he caught 51 passes last season.

New England also re-signed linebacker Niko Koutouvides and released running back Lex Hilliard, linebacker Mike Rivera and wide receiver Greg Salas.

Teagarden lifts O's to 4-2 win over Seattle in 18 (Yahoo! Sports)

SEATTLE (AP) -- The Baltimore Orioles weren't going to be denied a victory - or making history - even if it took 5 hours and 44 minutes to do it.

Taylor Teagarden stroked a pinch-hit RBI single to right in the 18th inning to help give the Baltimore Orioles a 4-2 comeback victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.

The win allowed the Orioles (84-64) to pull within a percentage point of the Yankees (83-63) for the lead in the AL East. The Yankees were rained out Tuesday and will play a split double-header with Toronto on Wednesday.

Baltimore maintained a three-game lead in the wild-card race over the Los Angeles Angels, who beat Texas 11-3 in Anaheim.

The Orioles' success in extra-inning games might be one of the biggest factors keeping them in the playoff hunt. They have won 14 straight extra-inning games for the longest extra-inning win streak since the 1949 Cleveland Indians won 19 straight. Overall, the Orioles are 14-2 in extra-inning games this season, going 9-0 in them on the road.

''It's tough,'' said Nate McLouth, who had three hits. ''When you start going that long, there's a part of you that has to fight the feeling, 'Oh, let's just get this game over with.' Especially in the position we're in. It's a really important game. It's hard to stay locked in that long.''

McLouth opened the 18th with a walk off Lucas Luetge (2-2). With McLouth breaking toward second, J.J. Hardy sent a single through the right-side hole. McLouth continued onto third.

McLouth said it wasn't a hit-and-run.

''I felt like I could get the bag. He had a strike on him so he swung,'' he said. ''It happened to go in a good spot.''

Teagarden then lifted his game-winner down the right-field line. Hardy later scored on Mark Reynolds' fielder's choice.

Tommy Hunter (5-8) picked up the victory. And he did it with a little extra measure of 'good luck.' Just before taking the mound in the 16th, one of the hovering seagulls unloaded on his hat.

''Here I was minding my own business,'' Hunter said. ''Guys were dying laughing. Then everyone said it was good luck. Then we won the game.''

Jim Johnson worked the 18th to pick up his 44th save - most in the majors - in 47 opportunities.

''It's a challenge,'' Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. ''It's a scenario you don't get into too much, but every now and then it happens. It's tough on both sides offensively. Everyone wants it so bad. We had so many opportunities. One more hit and the game's over.''

Orioles manager Buck Showalter added, ''that dugout was alive the whole time, the whole extra innings.''

The Orioles rallied in the ninth off starter Erasmo Ramirez, who had allowed just two hits and was sitting on a 2-0 lead entering the inning. Pinch-hitter Ryan Flaherty and McLouth opened with singles to bring in closer Tom Wilhelmsen.

Hardy dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Chris Davis followed with a two-run single to right.

''It tried to be aggressive with the hitters in the ninth,'' Ramirez said, ''just tried to get ahead in the count.''

Wei-Yin Chen went 5 1-3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out two.

It's the first time the Orioles have been 20 games over .500 since the last day of the 1997 season.

It was the longest extra-inning game for the Mariners this season. They are 5-8 in extra innings.

Justin Smoak and Dustin Ackley each had three hits for the Mariners.

It appeared that Chen would breeze through the fourth as the first two batters bounced out to the infield. Casper Wells then drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch. Miguel Olivo followed with his 11th home run on a 1-2 curve from Chen, who had started him with four straight fastballs.

Ramirez retired the first nine batters before McLouth's leadoff single in the fourth, just tipping off the glove of second baseman Ackley. Ramirez then retired the next eight straight before McLouth's double to center in the sixth. Center-fielder Franklin Gutierrez caught the ball on a dive but it popped out of his glove on contact with the ground.

Ramirez, recalled from the minors on Sept. 1, matched his career high with eight innings. He allowed four hits and both runs were charged to him. He struck out six and walked no one.

Both catchers, Matt Wieters and Olivo, caught the entire 18 innings.

''This is the first game I catch two games in one,'' Olivo said.

Showalter said of Wieters: ''I can't tell everyone how challenging it is to catch a game like that, make that many decisions and be right so often.''

NOTES: DH Jim Thome (neck) and LHP Troy Patton (ankle) are finishing rehab assignments at the Orioles' Sarasota facility and could rejoin the club this weekend in Boston. ''They're both close,'' manager Buck Showalter said. ''We'll make the call (Thursday).'' ... RH Miguel Gonzalez and RH Chris Tillman will start in Boston with the third starter to be decided. ... Chen is just the fourth Orioles rookie pitcher since 1954 to make at least 30 starts. He joins Bob Milacki (36 in 1989), Tom Phoebus (33 in 1967) and Brian Matusz (32 in 2010). ... Felix Hernandez was recognized before the game as the Mariners' nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award. ''That's a great honor,'' manager Eric Wedge said. ''Felix is the total package. To see what he does off the field, how he carries himself, how generous he is with his time, with people, it's well-deserved.'' ... RHP Hector Noesi, shelled for six runs and eight hits in 1 1-3 innings Monday, is back in the bullpen for the rest of the season. RH Blake Beavan will fill his spot in the rotation, starting Saturday. ... Michael Saunders was ejected in the 10th inning for disputing a called third strike.

Angels smack Rangers 11-3, stay in playoff chase (Yahoo! Sports)

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Jered Weaver spent a long stretch of his 100th career victory in the batting cage and the tunnel below Angel Stadium, playing catch to keep his arm warm while the Los Angeles Angels batted around in an eight-run fourth inning.

Weaver didn't lose his rhythm, and the Angels kept flowing toward a playoff berth.

Weaver pitched seven innings of six-hit ball in his 18th win of the season, Chris Iannetta had a two-run single and scored on a wild pitch during that crazy rally, and the Angels moved up in the AL postseason race with an 11-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night.

Weaver (18-4) gave up third-inning homers to Mike Napoli and Ian Kinsler, but got a huge cushion from his teammates to ease into a tie with Tampa Bay's David Price for the AL lead in wins. The ace right-hander, who has spent his entire career in Anaheim, matched his single-season high for victories and became just the sixth pitcher to win 100 games with the club.

''It's an honor to do it all in an Angels uniform,'' said Weaver, a Los Angeles-area native. ''I wouldn't have it any other way. Hopefully these fans see 200 more, but I don't know. We'll see what happens.''

What's happening on the scoreboards is more interesting to Weaver and his teammates at the moment.

Erick Aybar had three hits and scored two runs for the Angels (81-67), who moved within 3 1/2 games of wild card-leading Oakland with their 15th win in 20 games after the Athletics (84-63) lost at Detroit. Los Angeles also kept pressure on Baltimore, which sits in second place in the AL wild-card standings.

''We're at the point in the year when we just have to win,'' Iannetta said. ''We need to find a way. Texas, Oakland, Baltimore, they're all in the drivers' seat, but we've been on a real good three-week stretch. We just have to keep working.''

Los Angeles trimmed its deficit behind the AL West-leading Rangers (87-60) to 6 1/2 games, but the Angels are much more focused on making a late wild-card push - and with a few more innings like the fourth, they might have an outside shot.

Los Angeles sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth while carving up three Texas pitchers, including starter Ryan Dempster, during its biggest rally in nearly two months.

''It felt like a rain delay out there,'' Weaver said. ''But when runs are coming across the board, you can't complain too much.''

With eight Angels scoring a run, they had no trouble producing offense in the absence of Albert Pujols, who missed the game to be with his wife and their newborn daughter. The Angels expect Pujols to be back in the lineup Wednesday.

Dempster (6-2) was charged with five runs and six hits in 3 1-3 innings, ending his five-start winning streak with his second rough outing against the Angels. The veteran has yielded 13 earned runs to Los Angeles and just 15 to the rest of the AL during his nine starts for Texas.

''It got out of control,'' Texas manager Ron Washington said. ''We just couldn't get any outs. Dempster struggled from the beginning. It was a fight the whole time, and in that fourth inning, they just took the game away from us.''

All-Star Josh Hamilton left in the fourth with sinus trouble that affected the slugger's vision, Washington said. Napoli had two hits in another big game against his former teammates, but Weaver and two relievers largely shut down the majors' most potent offense.

Kinsler ended an 0-for-11 skid with just his second homer in 17 games, but the Angels got rolling in the fourth. After Vernon Wells and Alberto Callaspo reached, Iannetta cracked a one-out single off the bottom of the right-field wall before Mike Trout walked to chase Dempster.

Tanner Scheppers then threw two pitches: He hit Aybar with the first to load the bases, and put the second into the backstop for a wild pitch. Iannetta made contact with Scheppers' leg on his slide, leaving Scheppers on the ground in agony while Napoli's throw hit home plate umpire Jim Wolf, allowing Trout to score on a throwing error.

Scheppers left with a bruised right knee, but the Angels didn't let up against Mark Lowe.

Aybar scored on Kendrys Morales' single, a tapper that traveled about 15 feet up the third-base line. Wells and Callaspo then drove in runs before Mark Trumbo made his second out of the inning.

''It was strange and bizarre,'' Michael Young said. ''There were definitely strange things that happened that inning, but the bottom line was that they had some good at-bats and found a way to score. It doesn't matter how it happened. They scored eight.''

NOTES: Hamilton was replaced by Leonys Martin on defense in the bottom of the fourth. The major league leader with 42 homers walked and grounded out in his two at-bats. ... Weaver has never lost a decision to Texas at Angel Stadium, going 9-0. ... RHP Wilmer Font made his major league debut for Texas in the sixth, pitching a scoreless inning.

Escobar suspended 3 games for slur on eye-black (Yahoo! Sports)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Yunel Escobar insisted he meant no insult, reiterating that the words he wrote were supposed to be ''just a joke.''

The Toronto Blue Jays had a different read, suspending their starting shortstop for three games on Tuesday for wearing eye-black displaying a homophobic slur in Spanish during a game last weekend against Boston.

Escobar apologized to his team and ''to all those who have been offended.''

''It was not something I intended to be offensive,'' he said through a translator. ''It was not anything intended to be directed at anyone in particular.''

Escobar said he wrote the message 10 minutes before Saturday's home game on his eye-black, a sticker players wear under their eyes to reduce sun glare. The 29-year-old Cuban said he frequently puts messages there - usually inspirational, manager John Farrell offered - and had never previously written that specific slur.

Escobar insisted the word is often used within teams and by Latinos and ''I didn't see it as something bad at the time.''

''For us, it doesn't have the significance to the way it's being interpreted now,'' he said. ''It's a word without a meaning.''

''I don't have anything against homosexuals,'' he said, adding he didn't mean for the term to be ''misinterpreted'' by the gay community.

The suspension - issued after input from Commissioner Bud Selig, the players' union and team management - was to have started Tuesday night. The game between Toronto and New York was rained out and a day-night doubleheader was set for Wednesday.

The penalty was announced in a 26-minute news conference at Yankee Stadium. Escobar wore a jacket and jeans and was joined by Farrell, Toronto general manager Alex Anthopoulos, coach Luis Rivera and translator Robbie Guerra, a lawyer from the players' union.

Escobar's lost salary during the ban - about $82,000 - will be directed to two advocacy groups, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and You Can Play.

Escobar also will take part in an outreach initiative to promote tolerance to others based on their sexual orientation, and participate in a sensitivity training program.

Pictures posted online showed Escobar with the message written during the Red Sox-Blue Jays game. Farrell said Escobar's notes are often to the effect of ''Let's go today.'' They draw so little attention that nobody caught the change.

''There was no reason to think it was something derogatory,'' Farrell said.

Farrell said the slur was written in small letters and ''if someone had seen it, I would suspect someone would have said something.''

Major League Baseball regulations prohibit derogatory words and symbols on uniforms. Writing something of that nature on eye-black would fall under that category, MLB spokesman Pat Courtney said.

The NFL and college football have banned eye-black messages. The college ban came after stars including Tim Tebow, who wrote Bible verses, and Reggie Bush, who put his hometown area code, began to use the eye-black to send messages.

''Mr. Escobar has admitted that his actions were a mistake and I am hopeful he can use this unfortunate situation as an opportunity to educate himself and others that intolerance has no place in our game or society,'' Selig said in a statement.

GLAAD President Herndon Graddick commended the decision.

''Today's actions show that MLB and the Toronto Blue Jays are committed to creating an environment that all fans and families can enjoy, not a place where discriminatory language and anti-gay attitudes are accepted,'' Graddick said in a statement.

Anthopoulos said he had spent most of the day with Escobar at the commissioner's office.

''I don't know there's a right way to deal with these things,'' he said. ''You're not going to satisfy everyone.''

In May 2011, MLB suspended Atlanta pitching coach Roger McDowell for two weeks without pay for inappropriate comments and gestures with homophobic and sexual overtones he made toward fans before a game in San Francisco.

In April, Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen was suspended for five games by his team because of comments that he loves Fidel Castro. Many Cuban-Americans were angered by the remarks.

On Tuesday, Guillen said he didn't think Escobar meant to be offensive.

''I think he just did it for fun. I know he didn't mean to hurt anybody's feelings. Nobody is that stupid,'' he said before the Marlins hosted Atlanta.

''In my house, we call (each other) that word every 20 seconds. I've got three kids,'' Guillen said. ''For us, it's like 'What's up, bro? What's up, dude?' It's how you say it and to who you say it. But that's our country. We have to respect this country. Sometimes for us it's funny, for other people it's not.''

Escobar was traded from Atlanta to Toronto in July 2010. He is hitting .251 this season with nine home runs and 49 RBIs.

Escobar's salary this year is $5 million. The Blue Jays have club options on him for 2014 and 2015.

Cabrera drives in 6, Tigers rout A's 12-2 (Yahoo! Sports)

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 18 September 2012 | 20.03

DETROIT (AP) -- Miguel Cabrera homered twice, including an eighth-inning grand slam, and the Detroit Tigers had no trouble overcoming an early injury to right-hander Max Scherzer in a 12-2 rout of the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.

Cabrera matched a career high with six RBIs and now has 40 homers on the season - also a career best. Prince Fielder and Jhonny Peralta added home runs for the Tigers, who were three games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central coming into the night.

Scherzer left after two innings because of a fatigued throwing shoulder. An MRI showed no structural damage.

Darin Downs (2-1) pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings for the win.

Oakland rookie A.J. Griffin (6-1) lost for the first time in his career.

Scherzer entered the game with a major league-leading 220 strikeouts and added four more to that total before being relieved by Downs after only two innings. He's expected to go a couple days without throwing, then be evaluated again.

After a gut-wrenching 5-4 loss to the White Sox in Chicago on Monday, the Tigers were back home, where they've now won 27 of 35. They'll play their next nine games at home before going on the road for the final six.

Griffin was the only pitcher since at least 1918 to allow three runs or fewer and walk two batters or fewer in each of his first 11 career starts. That streak came to an end Tuesday. He allowed five runs and eight hits in 4 2-3 innings, walking one and striking out three.

Oakland took the lead in the first on an RBI single by Brandon Moss, but Detroit answered immediately with Cabrera's sacrifice fly.

Peralta gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the second with his 12th homer of the year, and Cabrera hit a solo shot of his own the following inning.

Fielder's 27th homer of the year - a two-run shot in the fifth - made it 5-1, and the A's never made much progress against the Detroit relievers. Oakland came in three games behind first-place Texas in the AL West, but leading the wild-card race. This 10-game swing to Detroit, New York and Texas is their last trip of the regular season.

Austin Jackson hit an RBI double in the sixth for Detroit, and Quintin Berry added a two-run double to make it 8-1. Berry left in the top of the seventh with a right shoulder contusion after a diving attempt to catch Josh Reddick's double. X-rays were negative.

Reddick scored on a single by Yoenis Cespedes.

Oakland outfielder Coco Crisp started after having been out since Saturday. He'd missed time because of an allergic reaction in his left eye, and he left this game in the fourth because of complications to an existing eye infection.

Detroit added four more runs in the eighth on Cabrera's grand slam. Oakland reliever Jesse Chavez was then ejected for hitting Fielder with a pitch.

NOTES: Detroit RHP Justin Verlander (14-8) takes the mound Wednesday night against Oakland LHP Brett Anderson (4-1).

UConn and Notre Dame may play at Fenway (Yahoo! Sports)

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Connecticut and Notre Dame are reportedly in negotiations to play a football game at Fenway Park in Boston.

The Day of New London and the Boston Globe, both citing officials involved in the talks, said the game would be played in 2014, and would be considered a home game for the Fighting Irish.

UConn Athletic Director Warde Manuel did not immediately return an email seeking comment Tuesday morning. Boston Red Sox officials said in March the team was interested in bringing football back to Fenway.

The park has hosted 41 football games in its 100-year history, but none since the New England Patriots beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 33-14, on Dec. 1, 1968.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said the idea is appealing. Yet he is uncertain if Fenway is equipped for football.

''I just saw that. You know me, I love Fenway Park. I just don't know if it's big enough,'' Kelly said. ''As long as they do the due diligence, and I know (Notre Dame athletic director) Jack (Swarbrick) is looking for great venues, and I don't think they played a game there in a long time. If it's on the schedule, we're going to play it.

''Being a Boston guy, baseball has not been very good there, so maybe we'll bring some football.''

The last-place Red Sox may be headed toward another offseason of change, but that doesn't mean Kelly has any less desire to play at Fenway.

''I think it would be cool, yeah. I'd like to do it,'' he said. ''But I think more than anything else, I don't know the ramifications of the 2014 schedule as it relates to ACC scheduling and all those kinds of things. I've been so focused on getting to the office today.''

But, if UConn and Notre Dame are close to finalizing this deal, it's news to Swarbrick.

''We have work to do on our future football schedules,'' he said, ''given the announcement last week relative to our upcoming Atlantic Coast Conference relationship.''

On Nov. 21, 2009, at Notre Dame Stadium, Connecticut outlasted Notre Dame, 33-30, in one of the Huskies' biggest victories as a Division I program.

NASCAR reinstates AJ Allmendinger (Yahoo! Sports)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- NASCAR reinstated A.J. Allmendinger on Tuesday, saying the driver had successfully completed its rehabilitation program after testing positive for a banned substance.

Allmendinger was suspended two months ago after failing a random drug test in June and his backup ''B'' urine sample later tested positive. NASCAR has not revealed the substance, but he has said he tested positive for Adderall, a prescription drug typically used to treat attention deficit disorder. He does not have an ADD diagnosis or prescription, and said he took it a couple of days before the June 30 race at Kentucky Speedway because he was tired.

''The Road to Recovery program was really helpful to me in getting my priorities reset away from the race track,'' Allmendinger said in a statement. ''And, honestly, that helped find my love of racing again and why I began racing in the first place. I'm looking forward to taking this experience and be better for it moving forward.''

Allmendinger was suspended July 7, just hours before the race at Daytona and forcing Penske Racing to bring in Sam Hornish Jr. at the last moment. Allmendinger was released by Penske Racing after the ''B'' sample failed and the only way to come back to the series was to complete NASCAR's ''Road to Recovery'' program.

Now that he's done it, he may find a home sooner than anyone expected back in July.

Team owner Roger Penske had Allmendinger as his guest at the IndyCar season finale last weekend and said the 30-year-old driver is a viable candidate for rides in both NASCAR and IndyCar. Penske said he'd consider hiring Allmendinger again.

Allmendinger was hired in late December by Penske to fill the seat that opened when Kurt Busch split with the organization. It was the most prolific ride of Allmendinger's career, and both driver and team seemed thrilled with the pairing even as Allmendinger struggled at times in the No. 22 Dodge. He was 23rd in the Sprint Cup Series standings heading into Daytona, where he won the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona sports car race in January.

The July suspension came at a time when Penske was evaluating picking up the option on Allmendinger for 2013. Hornish filled in for Allmendinger, but Joey Logano was hired to drive the car next season.

The next step for Allmendinger may be up to owners like Penske.

''He could be an option for us, for sure,'' Penske said before the IndyCar finale at Auto Club Speedway on Saturday. ''He's someone we would consider.''

Allmendinger spent three seasons in Champ Car, and won five races in 2006 before moving to NASCAR.

''This is a speed bump in his career, but he's certainly an option for people on the NASCAR side and the Indy side,'' Penske said.

Penske doesn't have an open seat in NASCAR, and it's not clear what will happen with his third IndyCar team. He's already picked up the 2013 options on Will Power and Helio Castroneves, but has told Ryan Briscoe he's free to look around while the team tries to secure sponsorship for that seat.

Allmendinger was the second Sprint Cup Series driver suspended under NASCAR's tightened drug policy implemented in 2009. Jeremy Mayfield was the first and he unsuccessfully sued to have the results overturned. Court documents showed that Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamine.

In 2009, Allmendinger pleaded no contest in North Carolina to a misdemeanor charge of driving while impaired. He was given a 60-day suspended sentence, 18 months unsupervised probation and 24 hours of community service. Allmendinger drove for Richard Petty Motorsports at the time, and the team put him on probation through 2010 and fined him $10,000.

Cutler says he was wrong to shove Webb (Yahoo! Sports)

CHICAGO (AP) -- Jay Cutler acknowledges he was wrong to shove teammate J'Marcus Webb on the sideline during the Chicago Bears' loss at Green Bay last week.

He has no second thoughts about yelling at him, however.

Cutler says he does not regret that, but told WMVP-AM in Chicago that he ''shouldn't have bumped him.''

Cutler drew widespread attention for berating and bumping Webb, the starting left tackle, on the sideline and for making some controversial postgame comments after the Bears' 23-10 loss to the Packers on Thursday.

Spurrier: Shaw to start, moving on from suspension (Yahoo! Sports)

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina's Steve Spurrier says quarterback Connor Shaw will start Saturday when the seventh-ranked Gamecocks play Missouri.

The coach also said Tuesday that the Gamecocks accept the Southeastern Conference's one-game suspension of safety D.J. Swearinger and he will not play against the Tigers (2-1, 0-1 SEC).

Spurrier says Shaw was cleared to play after being able to throw at practice. Shaw first injured his throwing shoulder in the season opener at Vanderbilt last month. After missing a game, the quarterback returned for last week's 49-6 victory over UAB but had to leave the contest after another hard hit. Shaw said after the game he had a hairline fracture.

The Gamecocks (3-0, 1-0) will be without Swearinger, who was suspended by the league for his helmet-to-helmet hit on UAB's Patrick Hearn.

Eagles center Kelce out for year with knee injury (Yahoo! Sports)

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Eagles have placed center Jason Kelce on injured reserve, ending his season.

Kelce had surgery Tuesday to repair a torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee. Once that heals, he will have surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Center Steve Vallos was signed to take his spot. Dallas Reynolds will be the starter.

Vallos spent training camp with Philadelphia before he was released as part of the team's final roster cut down. Vallos has started eight games in four seasons with Seattle and Cleveland.

Kelce was injured in Sunday's win over Baltimore.

NFL Films President Steve Sabol dies at 69 (Yahoo! Sports)

NEW YORK (AP) -- NFL Films President Steve Sabol, half of the father-son team that revolutionized sports broadcasting and mythologized pro football into the country's favorite sport, died Tuesday from brain cancer. He was 69.

In March 2011, Sabol was diagnosed with a tumor on the left side of his brain after being hospitalized for a seizure.

He started working with his father, Ed - NFL Films' founder - in 1964, and they introduced a series of innovations now taken for granted today, from slow-motion replays to sticking microphones on coaches and players.

''Steve Sabol was the creative genius behind the remarkable work of NFL Films,'' NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement from the league confirming Sabol's death. ''Steve's passion for football was matched by his incredible talent and energy. Steve's legacy will be part of the NFL forever. He was a major contributor to the success of the NFL, a man who changed the way we look at football and sports, and a great friend.''

Ed Sabol was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year. The two received the Lifetime Achievement Emmy from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2003.

''We see the game as art as much as sport,'' Steve Sabol told The Associated Press before his father's Hall induction. ''That helped us nurture not only the game's traditions but to develop its mythology: America's Team, The Catch, The Frozen Tundra.''

Sabol received 35 Emmys for writing, cinematography, editing, directing and producing. No one else had ever earned that many Emmys in as many different categories.

He began his career as a cinematographer under his father. He was the perfect fit for the job: an all-Rocky Mountain Conference running back at Colorado College majoring in art history.

The Sabols treated sport as film and changed the way Americans watched and perceived games. Their advances included everything from reverse angle replays to setting highlights to pop music.

''Today of course those techniques are so common it's hard to imagine just how radical they once were,'' the younger Sabol told the AP last year. ''Believe me, it wasn't always easy getting people to accept them, but I think it was worth the effort.''

An accomplished collage artist, Sabol exhibited at the ArtExpo in New York, the Avant Gallery in Miami, the Govinda Gallery in Washington, the Milan Gallery in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Garth Davidson Gallery in Moorestown, N.J.

It was Steve's high school football games in Philadelphia that gave Ed his only experience filming sports before he won the rights to chronicle the 1962 NFL championship game.
